Tesla is reportedly preparing to put its purpose-built Cybercab into public service in Austin as soon as this month, according to The Verge. Tesla employees have been testing fully driverless Cybercabs on private roads since July, while other test vehicles have been spotted around the country equipped with steering wheels and pedals for continued data gathering.

Is it actually driverless yet?

Not consistently. Some units on public roads still carry a steering wheel and pedals, which Tesla is using to keep collecting data before removing the human-control option entirely.

Is the safety case settled?

No. The Cybercab runs on Tesla's Full Self-Driving software, which Tesla says is significantly safer than human driving. Independent safety experts and federal regulators disagree with that framing, and FSD remains under active NHTSA investigation for traffic-compliance failures, more than a year after Tesla's Robotaxi service first launched.
