This comes as NHTSA has separately urged autonomous vehicle developers to improve how their vehicles respond to first responders, construction zones, and temporary traffic changes. Parking violations are a much lower-stakes version of the same underlying issue: a vehicle correctly following its programming, but still missing real-world context a human driver would catch instantly.
Statistically Safer Doesn't Mean Trouble-Free
Paul raised a genuinely sharp distinction on the show: there's a real difference between an occupied vehicle idling somewhere it shouldn't, which can simply pull away the moment someone objects, and an empty, driverless vehicle parked in the same spot, which legally is just parked, with nobody present to move it. That distinction is exactly why an autonomous vehicle racks up citations a human idling in traffic never would.
None of this contradicts the broader safety data. Independent analysis from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety found Waymo's crash involvement rate is 68% lower than human drivers across more than 50 million driverless miles.
