Two buyers walk into the same dealership on the same day and buy identically equipped new cars. One pays thousands more than the other. Most people in the car business have seen it happen. TrueCar CEO Scott Painter thinks those days are numbered.
“At some point, the arbitrage around what people pay for a new car is going to be over.” Scott Painter, TrueCar
Scott Painter’s Predictions for AI and Auto Retail
Painter shared three big predictions on the show:
Prediction | What’s driving it |
|---|---|
AI will scale car brokering | AI agents could contact dozens or even hundreds of dealers at once, asking for their lowest price and starting the negotiation |
Dealer consolidation will accelerate | Larger groups have more leverage with automakers and more back-end gross to compete with, making it harder for single-point family stores |
New-car price gaps will disappear | Transparency, whether driven by AI or by dealers choosing to “hug the cactus early,” will mean nobody overpays and nobody underpays |
His logic starts with a simple distinction. No two used cars are the same, so their values have to be inferred. But new cars come off an assembly line as identical products, each with a set MSRP. That makes new-car pricing especially easy for AI to compare.
The biggest fear for dealers, Painter says, is being reverse-auctioned at scale by a computer, sparking a race to the bottom. That’s why he believes AI tools need to be built in a way that helps protect a dealer’s front-end and back-end gross.
“It’s going to be harder and harder for the single-point family store to be competitive.” Scott Painter
How Dealers Can Prepare for More Transparent Pricing
Painter’s view of consolidation will be tough news for many family-owned stores. We’d add that scale isn’t the only advantage in this business. Community roots, service relationships, and trust are hard for any computer to auction away.
But his larger point is hard to argue with. Every time technology goes deeper into an industry, pricing gets more efficient, and that can be good for everyone. The dealers who will thrive are the ones who get ahead of transparency now rather than waiting for AI to force it.
When every price can be compared in seconds, the experience is what customers remember.
