If you live around Nashville, you've probably heard people wondering when the third shift at Nissan's Smyrna plant might come back. Kyle, who lives about 25 minutes from the plant, says it comes up a lot. Nissan just gave those neighbors a reason to hope.
Nissan Americas Chairman Christian Meunier said Monday that hybrids will likely become the brand's primary powertrain in North America by 2030.
"I think the hybrid is going to become by 2030 probably the primary powertrain in North America but also in Latin America."
What's on the roadmap?

November 2026: The redesigned Rogue arrives in the
US, with the first e-Power hybrids shipped from Japan
Spring 2027: Gas-powered Rogue production begins in Smyrna
By 2028: Rogue e-Power production moves to Smyrna, an e-Power Kicks arrives, and US-built V6 hybrids start rolling out across a new line of body-on-frame SUVs and pickups, starting with the Xterra
End of 2030: 80% of the vehicles Nissan sells in the US are built here
Nissan wants hybrids at 30% to 40% of its Rogue-segment sales "very quickly," and expects that mix to lift transaction prices, margins, and residuals. It has already stopped building the Rogue Plug-in Hybrid, after Meunier said US plug-in volume "collapsed down to almost zero."
Why does the Smyrna plant matter so much?
Smyrna can build 600,000 vehicles a year and is making about 400,000. Filling it would likely mean adding that third shift, and Kyle pointed out that those jobs ripple outward through the suppliers clustered around the plant. Nissan is a big enough presence in Nashville that its name is on the Titans' stadium.
Nissan's US-built share has already climbed from 40% in early 2025 to about 65% today, as the company works to reduce its tariff exposure.
Is Nissan late to the hybrid party?
Yes, and it knows it. Toyota now sells the RAV4 exclusively as a hybrid. Kyle's read is that Nissan is finally copying Toyota's homework, which is exactly what it needed to do, and after a rough five years, he's hopeful. Paul called the 2030 timeline reasonable.
For Nissan dealers, the hybrid gap has been a tough conversation for years. Use the next 18 months to learn e-Power well enough to explain it in one sentence.
