SOMETHING FUN
This year marks 100 years since the very Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade. Well, sort of.
You see, the very first parade wasn’t even about Thanksgiving at first. Launched on November 27, 1924, it was originally dubbed the Macy’s Christmas Parade.
Inspired by European immigrants' parade traditions, it was a six-mile route around Harlem featured floats, clowns, and animals from the Central Park Zoo—yes, actual lions and elephants.
The department store officially changed the name in 1927, allowing the event to serve as more of a kick-off to the holiday shopping season.
Other than the parade paused from 1942 to 1944 due to WWII, Santa’s sleigh has closed every show since its debut.
Macy’s wasn’t the first. Gimbels in Philadelphia beat Macy’s to the Thanksgiving parade idea in 1920.
Felix the Cat originally strutted on stilts. Helium balloons didn’t debut until a year later.
In the early years, balloons were often released after the parade. They contained a return address on them and whoever found the balloon could return the balloon for a prize from Macy’s. The tradition ultimately ended when one loose balloon became entangled in the propeller of a small plane, nearly taking it down.
Santa’s always the star. From the start, Santa Claus has closed the parade in his sleigh. His float is now 60 feet long,
Around 50M viewers tune in to watch the parade on TV each year. About 3.5M brave the brisk streets of Manhattan to see it in person.
What’s it cost? Macy’s keeps that under wraps, calling it a “gift to the city” (but, experts estimate it costing upwards of $13M this year alone).
