From the Automotive State of the Union
Paul J Daly and Kyle Mountsier don’t just read headlines; they make important connections across car dealerships, general retail, tech, and culture, all to help automotive leaders think clearly and move faster in a world that refuses to slow down. Catch up on yesterday’s stories:
Proton Dealership IT’s 2025 report says organized cyberattacks on retailers remain 150–250% above pre-outage levels. December 2024 attacks doubled, and a March 2025 supply-chain breach embedded malware in website photos. Criminals’ time hits for holidays and off-hours. Enforce MFA, deploy MDR, and train staff—payroll, banking, OEM systems are at risk.
Chevy floods the zone before credits fade: Equinox EV leases from $249, up to $3,000 cash (Equinox) and $4,000 (Silverado EV), 0%/60, Costco adds $1,250.
Goodyear’s “Wingfoot One” floated over Detroit for Automotive News Congress, marking dual 100th anniversaries; attendees snagged rides from Willow Run as the blimp saluted industry.

EV Data
Global EV sales hit 1.7M units in August, a record tally but with slower YoY growth (15%). The U.S. spiked as buyers rushed to capture expiring credits, while China cooled and Europe surged. Analysts see one more strong month, then a Q4 air pocket as credits sunset.
Hyundai
Meanwhile, Hyundai’s Georgia battery plant faces a 2–3 month delay after a federal raid sidelined hundreds of Korean contractors. The auto assembly line stays on track, but battery know-how is in limbo as Washington and Seoul negotiate visa fixes.
Other headlines:
DOJ vs. Uber: suit alleges systemic ADA violations; compliance gaps can get costly.
Ford recall: 1.5M vehicles (2015–2019) for faulty backup cameras; expect service lane demand and recon checks.
Toyota SmartPath: hits 1M digital retail sales milestone, as GM’s Mary Barra stirs debate with her “own your job” post.

Powered by Urban Science®️ DataHub™️, this data reveals real-time industry-wide insights. Nearly 20% of CRM leads may have already bought elsewhere due to process breakdowns like poor communication or unclear pricing. By identifying these lost leads, dealerships can stop wasting time, coach teams more effectively, and improve sales effectiveness. Benchmarking against market standards also helps assess true performance.
Defection isn’t failure—it’s insight, allowing dealers to refine strategies, improve efficiency, and gain a competitive edge without increasing marketing spend.

We caught up with Jonathan Smoke, Chief Economist at Cox Automotive, during NAMAD to talk tariffs, EVs, and where the market’s really heading. His insights cut through the noise: tariffs may echo the 1930s, but the market still holds, seven million sideline buyers are waiting for the right payment, EV share just hit a record 9.1 percent, and Chinese EVs could be the wildcard that pushes us past 17 million SAR. Dealers who stay agile on pricing, payments, and EV readiness will win the next cycle.
