Every neighborhood seems to have that family who takes a six-seat golf cart one block to the community pool. A Miami startup thinks that family is onto something.
For some trips, the right vehicle might be a lot smaller than the one in your driveway.
Chip Motors Neighborhood EV: Price, Range, and Features
Chip Motors, founded in 2024, is developing what it calls a "Life Utility Vehicle," an electric neighborhood vehicle designed to handle a family's everyday errands.
CHIP SPEC SHEET
Price: $15,000 for four seats, $18,000 for six
Range: Up to 100 miles
Top speed: About 25 mph
Personality: Expressive headlights that smile and blink, plus a voice feature that can say hello
In development: AI that can manage music and the family calendar, plus driverless trips to pick up groceries or go home to charge
Timing: First production deliveries planned for 2027
Chip lands in a fast-growing market. Golf cart sales are expected to grow by $1 billion globally over the next seven years, with the US making up roughly half of the market. Rising car prices and fuel costs are pushing more families to look for cheaper ways to get around.
The catch is where Chip can go. As a low-speed vehicle, it's limited to roads and communities that allow it.
At $15,000, Chip costs less than a third of the average new car, and that's why people are paying attention.
What Neighborhood EVs Could Mean for Dealers
For dealers in markets with big planned communities, retirement areas, or beach towns where these vehicles are allowed, this could be a real opportunity. Customers in those places already spend heavily on golf carts, and they tend to love customizing them.
It's also a signal worth watching. Families are looking for cheaper second vehicles that fit how they actually live, and if a $15,000 neighborhood EV can handle the school run and the grocery trip, some of them may decide they don't need a second full-size car.
The next second car might be the one that never leaves the neighborhood.
