OpenAI's advertising business reached a $1 billion annualized revenue run rate less than 200 days after launch, with ChatGPT Ads now live in more than 40 countries and tens of thousands of advertisers on the platform.

The Numbers

  • $1 billion annualized ad revenue run rate, achieved in under 200 days

  • 40+ countries now running ChatGPT Ads

  • 3x ROAS reported by one e-commerce advertiser over a 28-day window

  • 80%+ of ad-driven ChatGPT traffic reportedly came from new customers

The Number That Actually Matters to Dealers

None of that is the real story for auto retail. Ben's read from his own Auto Genius data is:

The conversion rates of AI traffic, meaning close rates too, is way higher. It's a very small fraction of your traffic, but it converts really well. That tells me it's because you trained and trusted this personalized thing you're talking to, and if it's making a recommendation, you believe it.

— Ben Hadley

That trust is the entire asset. It's also exactly what's at risk the moment paid placements get mixed into the same conversation a shopper thought was neutral.

Everything Old Is New Again

Kyle's closing point ties this back to a fight the industry thought it had already had.

We already know there's a conversion rate gap between organic and paid traffic on Google. Do we see that same gap, or a deeper one, between organic AI traffic and paid AI traffic?

— Kyle Mountsier

Ben's response was blunter: the "buy your own name" debate, dealers paying to appear in search results for their own brand name, is apparently starting over inside AI platforms, and early signs suggest it's worse, not better.

A billion dollars in ad revenue is OpenAI's win. Whether AI search stays trustworthy enough to convert like this is everyone else's problem.

Dealers watching this space shouldn't be tracking OpenAI's IPO math. They should be tracking whether the AI-referred customer showing up at the store next month is still getting a neutral recommendation, or a paid one wearing a neutral one's coat.
