Think about the last time you researched a big purchase. Odds are, you asked your phone a question and got an answer before you ever visited a single website. Car shoppers are doing the same thing, and that's quietly changing who gets to tell a brand's story.
The first conversation about your inventory may now happen without you in it.
How AI Search Is Cutting Toyota.com Traffic by 20%
Toyota marketing chief Mike Tripp says AI agents are rapidly replacing traditional search for early vehicle research. Traffic to Toyota.com and other top-of-funnel sites is down about 20%, which Tripp says matches the broader industry.
Old playbook | Toyota's new playbook |
|---|---|
Search engine optimization (SEO) | Generative and agent engine optimization (GEO and AEO) |
Paid ads for individual models | Marketing families of vehicles across its 20 nameplates |
Driving clicks to the website | FAQ-style content built for AI models to scrape |
Assuming the site is the source | Auditing AI answers so Toyota stays the "source of truth" |
Toyota is also leaning more on community-based marketing, earned media, and influencers. The silver lining: shoppers who still reach Toyota.com have a much higher propensity to buy, and they still finish the deal on Toyota.com, through SmartPath, or at a dealer.
"Anyone that's not already doing this is behind the curve. It's not just the OEMs, it's not just the dealers. It's everyone with a product to sell that gets listed online." Erin Keating, Cox Automotive
What Generative Engine Optimization Means for Car Dealers
Tripp's line that "nobody surfs the web anymore" makes a great headline, but it oversells things a bit. SEO, GEO, and AEO all grow from the same root: quality, structured data and content. A dealer who already does SEO well has most of the foundation in place.
The metric worth watching is direct traffic. Zero-click searches, where shoppers get their answer right on the results page, are making impressions more expensive. But shoppers who've already heard about your store through AI answers, reviews, or word of mouth are increasingly typing your address in directly.
So here's a two-minute Friday test: open an incognito browser and type your dealership's domain without the "www." If it doesn't land on your homepage, you're losing the exact shoppers who already decided to find you.
Fill the top of the funnel with good information, and make sure the front door actually opens.
