Anyone who's filled up a Suburban lately knows the feeling: watching the pump climb past a number you'd rather not see. With gas near $4.50 and the average new vehicle above $50,000, more shoppers are deciding they don't need that much vehicle after all.

When budgets tighten, buyers don't stop shopping. They shop smaller.

Q3 2026 Sales: Small SUVs and Passenger Cars Gain Ground

Third-quarter results showed a clear split by size and price:

Gaining ground

  • Chevrolet Trax and Trailblazer posted big gains

  • Hyundai Elantra sales jumped 18%

  • Toyota Corolla is sharply up this year

  • Honda passenger car sales rose 18%, their best since 2020

Losing ground

  • Chevrolet Suburban and Tahoe declined

  • Hyundai Palisade slipped 1%

  • Jeep Grand Cherokee fell 30%

The Trax, Trailblazer, and Elantra all start below $25,000. Honda says some shoppers who once considered a small SUV are now choosing an Accord instead, while the Civic is in short supply.

GM's overall sales fell 5.5%, though it held the top spot, and full-size pickup sales rose. Stellantis sales were flat, and CEO Antonio Filosa said Chrysler will soon add cheaper vehicles, since Stellantis has few models under $40,000. "We have a huge opportunity below $40,000," he said.

Why Affordable Cars Matter for Dealer Inventory Strategy

During COVID, much of the industry shifted toward trucks and large SUVs because the profits were so much higher. The brands that kept their lower-priced lineups now look smart, and plenty of their dealers are quietly glad they held on.

For Stellantis, the gap below $40,000 is a real problem in a market where affordability is driving decisions. For every dealer, the lesson is the same: know your entry-level options cold. The customer walking in for a midsize SUV may leave happier in a sedan that fits the budget.
