Honoring American Workers

giphy

Still grinding away today? Labor Day was designed to honor exactly that work ethic, and that’s why it’s worth remembering its roots. Let’s take a look back:

Origin Story: The first Labor Day celebration was on September 5, 1882, in New York City, where 10,000 workers marched for better conditions and fair pay. President

Olive Branch: President Grover Cleveland officially signed Labor Day into law in 1894, likely as a way “to make peace” with the working class after the Pullman Strike earlier that year ended in bloodshed.

Who Really Started Labor Day? The title of founder is a toss-up between Matthew Maguire, a union leader in New York, and Peter J. McGuire of the American Federation of Labor. Both played a big part in organizing the first Labor Day parade, so let’s just call it a team effort.

🔥 Fun Facts to Drop at the BBQ:

  • Labor Day was celebrated in the U.S. before there was a Labor Department, which wasn’t founded until 1913.

  • The Fair Labor Standards Act set the minimum age of employment at 14 years old and restricts the number of hours that minors under the age of 16 can work.

  • The National Education Association is currently the largest union in the country with about 3M members.

  • According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the median weekly earnings of full-time workers was $1,139 in the first quarter of 2024.

  • The NFL season traditionally kicks off after Labor Day, with the first game of 2024 set for September 5th.
