GM may be easing off its plan to eliminate Apple CarPlay and Android Auto after real customer backlash, and the 2027 Cadillac Lyriq configurator is the tell.
GM announced in 2023 it would phase out CarPlay and Android Auto, starting with its EVs, in favor of pushing customers onto its own native infotainment system. The 2027 Lyriq configurator still lists both integrations as standard. That's a meaningful shift from a strategy that once looked firm.
Cadillac is continuing to evolve its infotainment strategy across the EV portfolio, based on customer feedback, while also prioritizing the native, in-vehicle experience.

The Subscription Only Matters If the Customer Is Still Driving the Car
GM's original logic made sense on paper: keep customers inside its own platform, capture subscription revenue, own more of the driver data. What that logic missed is simple. None of that revenue exists unless a customer chooses the vehicle in the first place, and CarPlay and Android Auto are exactly the kind of familiar, expected interface most mainstream buyers won't compromise on.
Tesla and Rivian can get away without it because their customers already bought into a different kind of brand relationship. GM's customers didn't sign up for that trade.
Slow Walking a Reversal Is Still a Reversal
Calling this "continuing to evolve its infotainment strategy based on customer feedback" is a polished way of admitting the original plan didn't work. That's not a criticism, it's the right move. The lesson worth sitting with is how long it took to get there, and how much customer frustration piled up in the meantime. A strategy this disconnected from what buyers actually wanted probably should have been tested smaller and reversed faster.
What This Means for Your Store
If you're fielding customer questions or pushback about infotainment on any GM EV right now, you have a real, current answer: CarPlay and Android Auto are back on the table for 2027 models like the Lyriq, and the company's own language suggests that trend continues.
Don't wait for a press release to confirm it before using it in a conversation, the configurator itself is already showing you where this is headed.
