Europe used to feel like a preview of where the U.S. auto market might be headed.

Lately, it looks more like the front line of a very different fight: legacy automakers trying to hold ground while Chinese brands push in with cheaper EVs, faster development cycles, and a lot less nostalgia.

Today’s news has Stellantis looking for Europe’s answer to Japan’s kei cars, Ford trying to bring back some personality, and Chinese automakers treating Europe as the proving ground before the U.S. wall gets any lower.
