šŸš™ The Advantage, Volvo's Trim, and More from ASOTU CON

TOGETHER WITH

Good morning, Friend!

We’ve all got plenty to do today, so let’s do it to the best of our ability.

Discipline is such a buzzword with a weird floating definition, but one of the best is by Bobby Knight:

ā€œDo what needs to be done, when it needs to be done, the best way it can be done, and do it that way every time.ā€

Easy peasy, right?

Keep Pushing Back,

California Counter-Sue, Selling the House, and Chinese Stock Slides

California’s coming in hot after Congress voted to yank its clean car authority. The Golden State says the vote’s illegal, the feds are overreaching, and it’s suing to keep its EV rules alive. If you’re in one of the 17 states tied to California’s standards, grab some popcorn—and maybe a backup plan.

Meanwhile, 11 states said, ā€œSame energy.ā€ They launched the Affordable Clean Cars Coalition to push EV access and protect their right to set stronger standards, feds be damned. Looks like states are taking the wheel, whether Washington likes it or not.

Nissan? Selling the house. Their HQ in Yokohama may hit the market as they scramble to cut costs after a $4.5B loss. It’s not just buildings—Nissan’s closing plants, trimming models, and trying not to trip over another merger. U.S. dealers haven’t been hit yet, but the ripple effect could get real.

Volvo’s trimming too—3,000 jobs worth. Mostly corporate and mostly in Sweden, but it signals more belt-tightening as trade tensions with the U.S. rattle nerves. Volvo’s still in the EV game, just with a little more ā€œflexibilityā€ (read: hedging).

And over in China, the EV price war just went nuclear. BYD dropped its cheapest EV to $7,800—with trade-in bonuses—causing automaker stocks to nosedive. Great Wall’s CEO even compared the state of the industry to China’s Evergrande collapse. Not great! This price war could start creeping westward, and that means U.S. dealers might soon be dealing with shopper expectations shaped by sub-$8K cars.

So what’s the vibe?

  • Uncertainty is the only constant.

  • EVs are presently the future, but cost cuts and politics are clouding the road.

  • Dealers could stay nimble on pricing, product mix, and customer messaging to see some good thing.

Space Auto at ASOTU CON

We had a blast at ASOTU CON. Folks learned, connected, shared, and touched the good story at the core of retail auto.

The event would not exist without collaborators who believe in what retail auto is today and see all it can be tomorrow.

Like our friends at Space Auto. As collaborators at the event, they gave life to the Podcast Stage and brought action and insight together in a session called ā€œSEO to GEO.ā€

Of course, ASOTU CON is a small part of what they do every day for dealers. See how Space Auto is helping dealers win through their unified approach to website, Digital Retail, and CRM.
